Give and take in equal measure
Psychiatrists are doctors. They use their understanding of physical problems and how the brain works to think with young people about how difficulties may have developed for them. Some people are helped by having a diagnosis so they can understand their difficulties, and psychiatrists often make a diagnosis. Some people might think that medicines can help and psychiatrists are good people to talk to if you want to understand how a medicine might improve how you are feeling. Sometimes psychiatrists may see young people as part of an assessment along with their colleagues to give an overview of what may be helpful.
Martin had been feeling very low for a long time and couldn't see how things were going to improve. He found it very hard to talk about any of his worrying thoughts. He was reassured to find out that by taking an antidepressant for a short period of time he would find it easier to talk to someone and start things moving forwards.
